BALPURE®
BALPURE® electrolytic sterilization ballast water management facility with a type approval is an economical and eco-friendly AIS (Aquatic Invasive Species) management solution. BALPURE provides a stable management solution for both newly built vessels and existing vessels to comply with strict ballast water regulations. This exceeds IMO D-2 standard.
Ballast water management
With ballast water management, only 1% of total ballast water inflow is used to generate hypochlorite sterilizer so Balpure facility can be installed far away from the main ballast facility.
  • This ballast water management method makes it possible to operate facilities in an environment of water with low sodium and low temperature.
  • This ballast water management method provides many advantages to a vessel which has a pump room or a hazardous cargo area.
  • Balpure facility can be installed in an engine room or machinery room which is categorized as a safe place.

Advantages of oil tankers and carriers
The design and management of Balpure facility is useful especially for crude oil tankers, chemical /product carriers, LNG/LPG carriers, container carriers, etc. Balpure handles 500 - 20,000m3/h of ballast water for a vessel.
Verified automatic process
Balpure facility operates automatically for all procedures from ballast water inflow to discharge. As a verified electrolytic treatment method is utilized, only electricity and seawater are used to generate sterilizer on site when necessary. As residual sterilizer remains in ballast water tank of a ship during navigation, this removes possibility of regeneration of organism during transportation. All activated mixtures generated during electrolytic sterilization are neutralized safely before ballast is discharged.

BALPURE® is one of the most tested and verified ballast water management facilities.
BALPURE facility was tested extensively for more than 8 years. It was verified by other companies to satisfy strict standards about performance, corrosion, and safety.
IMO and Class Society Type Approvals
BALPURE facility is type-approved to comply with IMO conventions regarding ballast water management which will take effect soon.

Type Approval was received from Bureau Veritas in May 2012. Class society Type Approval applications are in process with ABS, DNV, GL and LR. The United States Coast Guard(USCG) has granted the Alternate Management System (AMS) to Severn Trent De Nora on 15 April 2013. The IMO Type-Approved BALPURE® ballast water treatment system from Severn Trent De Nora has become one of the first ballast water treatment technologies to receive USCG AMS certification. Preliminary test
Balpure facility went through a preliminary test at the University of Washington located in Marrowstone Island from 2004 to 2005.
Land-based test
An extensive land-based test by a world-class testing institute

Onboard test
Onboard test for Balpure facility took place 150-meter long T.S. Golden Bear, training ship of California Maritime Academy from May 2010 to December 2010. Balpure facility completed the onboard test successfully in December 2010. It passed IMO G8 requirements for ballast water management facility and IMO ballast water convention D-2 standard approval.
Commercial test
The commercial test for Balpure facility took place in an American-flagged double-hull vessel with 175 meter in length and 46,000dwt in weight, S/R American Progress operated by SeaRiver Maritime, Inc. The facility was certified by ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) in 2008. The vessel was approved by STEP (Shipboard Technology Evaluation Program) of the US Coast Guard in August 2009. It was given a right to discharge treated ballast water in California, the United States in August 2010.
Corrosion test
According to a corrosion test by GL Noble Denton, Balpure facility has no impact on coated steel, bronze, and alloy of copper and nickel. Also, the effect of ballast water on bare steel is found to be insignificant within statistical error limit for the effect of general seawater on bare steel.
CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamic) Modelling
We did a joint program with Germanischer Lloyd in Hamburg, Germany for 4 months to inject and mix oxidizer to ballast facility properly. As a result, we could apply for a patent for technology to handle injection and mixture of oxidizer into the measured facility and verification perfectly.
